So it’s all over! Gerhard has a great little story up on SBC about Craig Beaulieu’s win last night at (Grenade’s take on) the Telus Big Air. It was an awesome evening for every one involved with Grenade Games 5. From what i can tell by the word around town, it was kinda hard to see the whole course
for alot of spectators, so i think there was some confusion as too who won and why but for most competitors though it was exciting, you could walk into this thing with out a token big air trick and essentially walk away with 10G. What this years organizers did take into consideration was that an unorthodox big air could be a pleasant change for the ridders and that properly documented this event, along with the rest of the weeks events, could have a healthy shelf life on line.
Last night’s “Big Air Event” event was a slopestyle and points were awarded from the bomb drop at the start of the course to the bump of snow before the transfer pipe-jib at the bottem. The Canadian ridders killed it, and it was rad to see a bunch of Whistler’s finest going up against some international heavies. The course was fun and was a major departure from the usual one hit wonder standard-style, park jump. The goal of these games was to bring back some clout to the festival, to draw some big name international riders and to have some fun. And although it seemed like a little more partying then snowbroading whent down i think part of the defiance and sloppyness felt good, it felt good to know that the greasers could take charge and do something their own way and that a large scale snowboard event could be organized by people that make the scene not just finance it. I think it reminds us that the reckless, raw spirit that birthed snowboarding is still alive and kicking and that seemingly degenerate knuckle draggers can save themselves from being corporate stunt monkeys. Viva Grenade…come back soon Danny.
