Douglas Coupland interview on VIA
So as you may have noticed we’ve added some new bloggers, or contributers if you will, to the line up here at gcore. diversify and delegate right? ya somehting like that. So since Brocklebank and LeePipes (if he ever gets the hand of WordPress) will no doubt cover all things grease ridden i supose i can go back to seeking out more….how do i say this? culturally relevant, mature, intellectually stimulating…. well lets just say more things BESIDES SNOWBOARDING that i’m in to. There. Right? Ok
As a habit i like to cruise VIA on the regular cause it’s a sweet site and, well lets face it, i really think Vancouver is awesome, plus our friend Ben posts over there about film and videos (yes some skate) and that Bob K dude who runs the site seems pretty sweet… plus he does this, use to do this and was the art director for…..ooooh these dudes
VIA has just recently posted a sweet little interview with Vancouver’s own Douglas Coupland wich i’d say is worth a check out if your a fan. Now about Coupland -I have this friend (who shall remain unnamed) lets just call him Tony, who often engages me in wannabe in-depth conversations about who is good in the realms of what i’m reading. My answer is very often Douglas Coupland! To this Tony usually replies “ugghh he’s not even that good of a writer, anyone who’s spent a couple hours in Staples could write The Gum Thief, you need to read some one like Ayn Rand.” (or something along those lines) You see Tony’s a writer and a student and reads a shit load, i on the other hand read at a snails pace -partly due to my disgust with english class’s in my formitbale years and partly because i don’t lock myself in my room and spend every waking hour i have pouring and pouring over every scrap of text i can get my hands on. (can you smell the contempt?)
Well making a long post even longer, i’m here to inform you that Tony is WRONG and that D. Coupland is the man! He’s one of our most celebrated Canadians and Vancouverites and homeboy can write a storm. For a novice like me his books are captivating yet simple enough to not present the threat of an intimidating read. I thank my freind Ben (yes the same ben as i mentioned above) for turning me onto my first Coupland read, Girlfriend In A Coma, that book was so dope, and if your new to Coupland it might be a good place to start. Find a full list of Douglas’s books and works here
Here’s a wicked video clip excerpt from his latest The Gum Thief
