Artist of the week -CHAD VANGAALEN

I regret to say that i don’t personally know Chad (i’m just going to call him chad ok?) but i would like to, and perhaps i should. According to Flemish Eye chad is from Calgary, has a skate ramp in his back yard and “is known for rarely leaving his basement (where he’s ) endlessly recording, drawing and making art”

I tripped upon him while doing my usual music blog tour around the internets (i took that word interents from Love and Rum, its a gooder i’m going to keep using it) and within 5 seconds his sad and eerie songs had me hooked, after 10 seconds i found a youtube video of him doing stupid human tricks on letterman (totally unrelated to his music, yet so funny be sure to fwd to 2:34) and then this great little animated piece for “Molted Light” and thats what’s really hammered the nail into the coffin for me. Chad animated, wrote and performed the whole video. pretty cool.

“Molten Light” is one of the most blood-soaked, vengeful tracks VanGaalen’s ever released, a perfect exemplar of his twisted take on vintage murder ballads. The video, animated by Chad himself, gets even weirder, an R. Crumb-oozing horror show that ends, inevitably, with the imagery of VanG’s edict: “She’ll find you and she’ll kill you!” -Rawkblog
